A new Reuters investigation finds that action against people linked to Iran’s January protests has extended beyond the country’s borders, in some cases affecting Iranians living overseas and their families. Published on 8 October, the investigation draws on interviews with more than 75 human rights experts, lawyers and Iranian citizens, and reports arrests, closed-door trials, executions and pressure on some opponents abroad.
According to Reuters, Iran’s security agencies, judiciary and state media have played a role in action against a number of people connected to the protests. Reuters reports that at least 34 people have been executed in connection with the January protests. The news agency also examined cases in which Iranians overseas, including in Türkiye, Armenia and Georgia, faced pressure involving family members, passport restrictions or access to consular services.
The investigation is particularly significant because it indicates that the repercussions of action against protesters may be felt beyond Iran. Reuters reports that, in some cases, pressure on relatives inside Iran can also affect Iranians living overseas. Activists, journalists, political opponents and their families are among the groups whose circumstances the report examines.
The findings nevertheless require careful reporting. This is an independent Reuters investigation, rather than an official statement from the Australian Government, the United Nations or an international judicial body. Reuters itself says it could not independently verify some of the individual accounts raised during its investigation. Details of those cases should therefore be understood in the context of the findings and accounts gathered by the news agency.
The issue is particularly relevant to the Iranian diaspora, including Iranians in Australia. People involved in civic, media or protest activities who also have family members living in Iran may have heightened concerns about their relatives’ safety and their own communications. However, the Reuters report does not announce any new change to Australian laws or the country’s immigration or consular policies.
