Through the programme Economic Pathways to Refugee Integration (EPRI) the Australian Government aims to reduce some of these barriers and create pathways to employment, training and even starting a business for refugees and holders of certain humanitarian visas.

The programme, which began in February 2023, has been extended until 30 June 2027 and specifically focuses on increasing employment among refugees and humanitarian migrants, particularly people with lower English proficiency or limited job skills.

Why does this programme matter to Afghans living in Australia?

A key point for the Afghan community is that Afghan nationals are specifically mentioned in the eligibility criteria for some of the visas covered by this programme. Holders of several refugee and humanitarian visas may be eligible, including Refugee visa (subclass 200), Global Special Humanitarian visa (subclass 202), Woman at Risk visa (subclass 204) and Protection visa (subclass 866). Holders of temporary humanitarian visas Subclass 449 and Subclass 786 are also listed as eligible, with Afghans specifically mentioned in the descriptions of these two groups.

However, holding one of these visas does not by itself guarantee eligibility; the programme requirements must be checked for each individual. Australian citizens are not eligible for EPRI.

What assistance is available?

EPRI offers more than ordinary job placement. Depending on where participants live, its projects may include vocational training, practical work experience, recruitment preparation, workplace English, advice and mentoring, paid employment and support to establish a small business. Across Australia, 20 organisations have been selected to deliver these projects. Opportunities are not limited to a single occupation. Projects offer pathways in construction and carpentry, warehousing and logistics, customer service, care, hospitality, restaurants and cafés, retail, transport, self-employment and business creation. For example, Civik People connects refugees with jobs in housekeeping, logistics, food production, customer service and care, and provides tailored support for up to six months after employment.

A special opportunity for refugee women

Some EPRI projects may be particularly valuable for refugee women and new arrivals. In Sydney, the programme First Shift Ready is designed for newly arrived refugee women with limited English and provides participants with 26 weeks of employment and vocational training in hospitality, food safety and customer service. Other programmes support refugee women and young people. For example, The Social Outfit in Sydney helps young refugee women enter the workforce through paid work experience, on-the-job training and mentoring.

From work experience to starting a business

There are also options for people who wish to start their own business rather than seek employment. Thrive Refugee Enterprise helps refugees and humanitarian migrants in several Australian states with self-employment, small business creation, access to finance and connections with employers. This may be relevant to migrants who had business or professional experience before arriving in Australia but are unsure how to use that experience within the Australian system.

Has the programme been effective?

An independent evaluation of EPRI found a continuing significant need for specialist employment support for refugees and humanitarian migrants. It found that the programme had reached groups that typically face greater barriers to entering the workforce, including new arrivals, people without post-school qualifications and women. After participating, people were often better prepared to enter employment or continue training, and increased confidence was also reported. Another important aspect is helping refugees understand the Australian system, from workplace expectations and rights to the administrative steps involved in starting a small business or obtaining a driver licence.

What should Afghans living in Australia do?

For an Afghan refugee or humanitarian migrant living in Australia who faces employment barriers such as limited English, a lack of Australian work experience or limited skills, EPRI may be an option to explore. However, services differ by location. Organisations operate in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia, and services vary between providers. Before applying, people should therefore check their visa type, personal circumstances, place of residence and providers operating in their area .

The EPRI programme has been extended until 30 June 2027 . The Australian Government has also said it is considering improvements, including expanding the list of eligible visas, increasing geographic coverage and improving referral pathways from other settlement and employment services.

Source: Australian Department of Home Affairs – Economic Pathways to Refugee Integration (EPRI)

[427,430,428

post-4086","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-atfarsi_life-in-australia","category-atfarsi-report-analyse","category-atfarsi_imigration-visa
["GET
