Security tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have again put pressure on global energy markets. Increasing attacks on ships and fears of disruption to oil shipments from the Persian Gulf pushed oil prices higher on Thursday. Fresh comments by an Iranian official about blocking routes Tehran describes as \u201cillegal\u201d have also heightened concerns about shipping security in the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n\n

Reuters reports that Brent crude rose above US$101 a barrel on Thursday, while US West Texas Intermediate crude also gained. Middle East developments have had a strong influence on markets in recent days. Attacks on ships, the risk of disruption to energy exports and rising transport and insurance costs have been cited as key concerns for traders.<\/p>\n\n

The security situation around the Strait of Hormuz has also become more concerning. Maritime security sources told Reuters that at least 12 attacks, attempted attacks or security incidents involving oil tankers and other energy-carrying vessels were recorded around the strait between 28 September and 5 October. According to the report, this was the highest weekly number of such incidents since the US\u2013Iran war began in February.<\/p>\n\n

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world\u2019s most important energy transport routes. A substantial share of the oil and gas exported by Persian Gulf countries passes through it. Any serious or prolonged disruption to shipping could therefore have consequences beyond the region and affect global energy markets.<\/p>\n\n

Meanwhile, Mohammadreza Naqdi, an adviser to the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has said Iran will soon block routes in the Strait of Hormuz that it considers \u201cillegal\u201d. He claims the routes were created near Oman\u2019s waters and are used by some boats to transfer oil illegally to tankers. These claims have not been independently verified and should be treated as the stated position of an Iranian official.<\/p>\n\n

Despite the insecurity, oil exports from some Persian Gulf countries improved in September. Data reported by Reuters indicate that regional energy exports increased during parts of last month. However, continued attacks on tankers, logistical constraints and higher transport costs have cast doubt on whether that improvement can be sustained.<\/p>\n\n

The recent developments matter beyond Iran and the Persian Gulf. Continued disruption to one of the world\u2019s most important energy routes could keep global oil prices elevated for longer. Higher oil and transport costs could gradually affect production costs, freight and fuel prices in countries around the world.<\/p>\n\n

The developments in the Strait of Hormuz are also significant for Australia. Australia sources some of its petroleum products from international markets, and domestic fuel prices are influenced by global factors. Continued increases in oil prices and international transport costs could therefore raise the risk of further pressure on Australian petrol, diesel and freight costs. However, a rise in global oil prices does not necessarily translate into an immediate, equivalent increase at Australian service stations; other factors also influence the final price.<\/p>\n\n

Conditions in the Strait of Hormuz remain fluid. Alongside actual oil export volumes, energy markets are closely monitoring security developments, shipping conditions and the risk of wider regional conflict. Any fresh disruption to tanker movements could again put pressure on oil prices and global markets.<\/p>\n\n
