The European Parliament has adopted a resolution highlighting concerns about the death penalty and the situation of several prisoners in Iran. Following a debate on 7 October, the formal process concluded on 8 October 2026<\/strong> with a vote and decision.<\/p>\n\n

According to official European Parliament documents, the resolution addresses the human rights situation in Iran. The cases of Taraneh Rahimi and Leila Abolhasani<\/strong> are specifically addressed. Its adoption comes amid growing international attention to Iran\u2019s use of the death penalty and ahead of World Day Against the Death Penalty.<\/p>\n\n

Executions in Iran have remained a focus for human rights organisations in recent months. Various reports have documented death sentences and executions, but figures published by different organisations vary. Numbers released by human rights groups should therefore not be presented as definitive or official statistics without independent verification.<\/p>\n\n

Developments concerning the death penalty and prisoners\u2019 circumstances also matter to Iranians living in Australia, particularly families with relatives or loved ones in Iran. Political prisoners, protesters, women and members of ethnic and religious minorities are among the groups whose human rights situation is being monitored by international bodies.<\/p>\n\n

However, a distinction must be drawn between the European Parliament resolution<\/strong> and executive measures such as European Union sanctions. Adoption of the resolution does not in itself impose new EU sanctions and should not be reported as an announcement of fresh sanctions.<\/p>\n\n
