The NSW Government has announced progress on plans to build 15 new social homes in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo neighbourhood. The homes would be built on government-owned land that has remained unused for many years. However, the project is still at the planning and public consultation stage, and construction has not begun.
According to the NSW Government’s announcement on 9 October 2026, the proposal includes 13 one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units. Homes NSW is seeking feedback from the local community, with a formal development application expected to be lodged in December.
The NSW Government describes the project as part of its efforts to make better use of public land and increase the supply of social housing. Although 15 homes is a modest number compared with Sydney’s substantial housing needs, the proposal comes as access to suitable, affordable housing remains a major concern for many families and people on low incomes.
At this stage, the announcement does not mean the homes are ready for applications or allocation. Nor does it announce a new application process for prospective social housing tenants. The project must first go through consultation, planning and the relevant development assessments.
Residents and other interested people have until 30 October 2026 to take part in the public consultation. The feedback collected will be considered before planning proceeds.
