A deadly shooting occurred during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, where around 1,000 members of Sydney’s Jewish community had gathered at Archer Park near Bondi Beach to mark the first night of Hanukkah. Two attackers opened fire on the crowd from a pedestrian bridge above. Authorities have described the incident as a terrorist attack motivated by antisemitism, making it one of the deadliest acts of violence in Australia’s recent history.
What Happened
At around 6:45 p.m. local time, the suspects—both wearing black clothing—began shooting at the crowd from an overhead pedestrian bridge. Witnesses said the first sounds resembled fireworks or balloons popping, before dozens of gunshots followed, causing panic and chaos among families and attendees.
Police in New South Wales Police responded within minutes. During an exchange of gunfire, one attacker, aged 50, was shot dead. The second suspect, a 24-year-old man, was wounded and is now under police guard in hospital. Emergency crews secured the area and launched an initial investigation at the scene.

Casualties
So far, 15 people have been confirmed dead. Many others were injured, with around 40 victims currently receiving treatment in hospital, including several children and two police officers. Victims range in age from 10 to 87. Among those killed were a child and a Holocaust survivor.
Flags and symbols linked to extremist groups were found at the scene. Australia’s counter-terrorism authorities have launched a full investigation into the motive and background of the attack.
Government and Community Response
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting as “an act of evil driven by hatred and antisemitism,” saying Australia will not tolerate violence, hate, or discrimination. He also announced a review of firearm ownership laws and licensing, along with stronger security measures.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed solidarity with the victims and urged unity against hate and violence. He confirmed that police patrols and security protections for the Jewish community have been increased across the state.
Acts of Courage
Amid the tragedy, stories of bravery emerged. Witnesses praised a man who tackled one of the attackers despite the danger and a young woman who shielded a three-year-old child with her body during the shooting. The public and media have widely recognized these acts of courage.

What Comes Next
Investigations are continuing into how the weapons were obtained and whether they were legally owned. The Australian government and parliament are expected to consider major reforms to gun laws, domestic security measures, and strategies to prevent violent extremism and hate-driven attacks.
