The Northern Territory government has raised the possibility of changing rules governing the publication of the identities of people accused of sexual offences. The current rules place significant restrictions on identifying defendants before trial.

According to a report by ABC News on 9 October, the Northern Territory government is considering changes to these rules. At this stage, however, no new law has been passed and no changes have taken immediate effect. The proposal should not be presented as final legislation.

Rules on identifying people in sexual offence cases are sensitive. They involve balancing the presumption of innocence until guilt is proven in court with transparency in the justice system and the rights of those involved in proceedings.

Existing rules will continue to apply until official details of a bill or legislative change are published and the legislative process is completed. No specific action is currently required from the public.
